60-Something and Hungover

My days of having a hangover are over!  Right??!!!

Well, maybe not.

On the hottest, most humid Saturday evening in June, I had a hangover.  Well, at least what I believe I remember of having a hangover – you’ll never know for sure if I ever really experienced one.  Something for inquiring minds, because, I’m not telling!

It all started with Mommy (that’s me) plus Me leaving on a 19-mile Saturday excursion.  You know, we do love having these mother and daughter adventures and actually, we have loads of fun together.  In comes the all enticing AMC Stubs.  At just $20/month and summer movies premiering non-stop, we couldn’t pass.  After all, we only had to see 2 movies in one month to get our money’s worth.  So, it was too appealing to let that one week end without using it.  Gotta get that deal! The passes had been purchased and I had never used mine.

So, we thought “what if we just see three movies in one day” – all on this hot, humid Saturday!  Decision was made.  [Me does not like wavering decisions.] Our eating schedule and most of all, the order of the movies was set.

We decided to go see our top three choices:  Yesterday (seemed maybe not as funny, but cute), Shaft (bring out Mommy’s old gangster days – yes, I am an O.G. ), and Late Night (Mindy Kaling was a big draw, especially to Me, and without doubt, would be super funny).

Wow!  None of the movies disappointed.  However, the comedy, the messages, and the overall appeal of the movies was a bit different than anticipated.  Hey, I am not a serious movie critic and we enjoyed all of them.  And, besides I confess, I am easily entertained.  Here’s the order of the day that we so meticulously crafted:

  1. First, Yesterday!  I loved Yesterday – the whole Beatles mania – got me!  I never remember liking or singing the Beatles tunes as much as I have in the last five days.  I cannot get the opening of “Eleanor Rigby” out of my mind – “All the lonely people, where do they all come from…” Anyway, lots of family, grit, perseverance, truth and love winning.

[Actually, the first part of all the movies was the previews!!  Almost 30 minutes before two of them.]

  • Break!  Snacks during movie followed by lunch/dinner.  (Reality – only had 30 minutes to get something to eat, so had to go to fast food place – ruining my “Good Girl – Keep the Weight Off” diet.  Done and back to the theater.
  • Oh, my goodness!  Shaft!  What can I say!  I liked the action, the comedy, the father-son dynamics, kicking butt movie.  My husband always had that CIA, undercover agent presence (I think it was his trench coat and that walk and black sporty cars)!  So I could easily imagine his being Shaft.   And I did think of the time I learned that my mother had a crush on Barry White and his deep voice. (Okay, okay, I digress.)
  • Food break!  I can think better with food in my mouth (much to Me’s detriment).  So, big popcorn break.  How can that buttery smell permeating throughout the theater be so deceiving?  That popcorn does not taste as good as your mind tells you.  Reality check.
  • Then, finally, Late Night!  Late Night was so much deeper and involved than I thought it would be. Within almost 120 minutes lots of topics were explored:  true workplace environments, being older, aging couples dealing with illness, diversity, and inclusion; and it was comedic. Told you that I am easily entertained.   Not “ha – ha” but real life humor.

We did it!  Three movies!  Got our money’s worth!

But, oh my goodness!  Did I ever pay for those nine hours!
I was exhausted like drained, dog-tired.  How could that be?  I’d been sitting down all day!

When I got home, I had to crawl to my bed, got in, covered my head, couldn’t talk (that’s a first), couldn’t think, and could only go to sleep.  “I feel like I got a hangover,” I thought and told Me.  How would I ever get over this feeling?

The next day, I told my son and my sister about the Saturday adventures and that we had seen three movies in one day! Disbelief and anguish…and they had only seen at most only two movies in one day.  Three movies in one day was over the top!  Evidently, Mommy and Me, had not counted the real cost of this adventure.

My “hangover” lasted for days.  (Just as I imagined – key word here – a real one – headache, stomachache, listless; my eyeballs hurt; I’m not kidding).  Sunday was rough but I got up and went to church, returned quickly home, and got in bed – slept for three hoursNever, will I ever, see three movies in one day – back to back – again!

Mommy

PS: We always remember it’s good to do a few “crazy good things” in your life.  Got to laugh often and always at yourself.    It’s the memories and life experiences that bring smiles to my face and chuckles to my heart.  These days are particularly touching with laughter, sometimes with tears, but that is okay.
